See what changed between two versions
When a contract, an article, a list or a piece of code comes back edited, reading both versions side by side is slow and easy to get wrong. Text Compare lines them up for you and marks every word that was added or removed.
Lines, words or characters
- Lines is best for lists, data and code, where each line stands on its own.
- Words is best for prose: a changed word is highlighted without marking the whole line.
- Characters finds the smallest edits, such as a changed digit in a number or a missing comma.
How to use text compare
- Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right.
- Pick how to compare and whether to ignore case and extra spaces.
- Read the result: green text was added, red text with a line through it was removed, and the counts show how much changed.
Good to know
- Ignoring extra spaces helps when the same text was copied from places that format it differently.
- The comparison runs in your browser, so confidential documents are never uploaded.
- Very long texts compare fastest by line. Use word or character mode on the part that changed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a diff checker?
Yes. “Diff” is the programmers’ name for the list of differences between two texts, and this tool shows the same thing with colours.
Can I compare two Word or PDF files?
Copy the text out of each document and paste it here. To get the text out of a PDF, you can use the PDF to Text tool first.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere; closing the page clears it.
